Dry Cupping

Dry/myofascial cupping is a type of therapy that utilises the vacuum property of the cups to lift the tissues and increase blood and lymphatic flow, decrease tension, and encourage healing. It also allows for multiple areas of the body to be worked on at once, providing efficient treatment for a larger area. Dry cupping is an excellent tool to use in people with areas of long term tightness and tension, or in sports people with a large amount of muscle mass.

Dry cupping does not draw blood or other bodily fluids and is most often painless, although in some sensitive individuals it may feel uncomfortable to begin with. The amount of vacuum put through the cups can be altered easily and we employ multiple techniques to allow the tissues time to adapt to the sensation.

Most commonly seen in athletes, cupping can leave painless red or purple bruise looking marks on the skin, which can last up to 14 days in some people. It is important to keep this in mind for your appointment.

Please note that dry cupping is used as an additional tool within osteopathic treatments, and not as a stand-alone therapy.

Kinesiology Taping

K- tape is a type of stretchy tape used on the skin. Often seen on athletes, k-tape can provide:

  • Increased proprioception
  • Off-load muscles to help with healing
  • Reduces Oedema (swelling)
  • Add support to joints such as shoulders, sacroiliac joints, knees, ankles
  • Supports baby bump
  • Increases lymphatic and interstitial fluid circulation
  • Decreased neurological compression

What are some conditions can K-taping help with?

  • Tendinopathies and muscle strains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • TFCC injuries
  • Runner’s knee or patella malalignment
  • SIJ dysfunction
  • Posture proprioception
  • Golfers/tennis elbow
  • Rotator cuff issues

K- Tape uses an adhesive to stick onto the skin, therefore if you are allergic to latex or adhesive, please tell us. If you do develop a reaction, you are advised to remove the tape, wash off the adhesive and use a cooling lotion or contact your pharmacist/GP if your skin continues to react.

Soft tissue/sports massage

Soft tissue massage or sports massage as its often referred to is a type of deep massage aimed at assisting the healing of damaged muscles, reducing muscular tension, warming up tissues before a sporting event, reducing fascial restriction, and can even help prevent injuries and tension build up.

Soft tissue massage vs osteopathy

Osteopathic treatment takes a holistic whole view of the body to look at interrelating structures of the musculoskeletal system and use a wide range of diagnostic tools and in depth case history to provide you with a working diagnosis, rehabilitation. Osteopathy also utilises multiple treatment techniques alongside massage to aid healing as well as providing lifestyle advice and exercise. Soft tissue massage only focuses of releasing the muscles and fascia where the area of complaint is. There is no assessment or diagnosis, and a basic case history is performed. Your practitioner can recommend what your best option is at the time of booking or during the consultation process.
